Jalandhar Top 5 Happenings for Last week Aug 16,2009

www.jalandhari.com
Here are some of top 5 happenings in Jalandhar for week ending Aug 16,2009.

* Swine Flu is again becoming a big concern for Jalandharies. Two NRIs from Jalandhar are suspected to have Swine Flu though it has not been confermed yet.

* Water and electricity problems continue to plague Jalandharies. Every week Jalandharies have been protesting on this issue. Now even Punjab Goverment has expressed their inability in solving the crisis and their is no hope in sight for years to come as building a power plant take years and no politician looks that far and they are concerned only for next election and promise of free electricity seems winnable promise than promise of building a power plant.

* Mr. Gurpreet Ghuggi and his wife Kuljeet Kaur made Jalandharies proud by winning the Hans Baliye contest. As always their performance was excellent. We wish them great success for years to come.

* Last week Janam Ashtami was celebrated with great fervour across Jalandhar. We wish all Jalandharies a Happy Janam Ashtami again.

* Independence Day was also celebrated with great enthusiasm . Independence day celebrations were held in most of schools. District level Independence day celebrations were held at Guru Gobind Singh Stadium. Tiranga was unfurled at 9:00 Am by Rural Developement and Panchayat Minister Mr. Ranjit Singh Brahampura. We wish all a very happy independence Day.

Jalandhar Top 5 Happenings for Last week Aug 09,2009

http://www.jalandhari.com/

Here are some of top 5 happenings in Jalandhar for week ending Aug 09,2009.

* Beggers are becoming a big menance in Jalandhar these days. Many of these persons are not destitute but criminals looking to steal valuables. Last week a number of snatchings and theft were reported across Jalandhar and Mayor acknowledged the problem and promised to resolve the problem. Let us see if words gets converted nto action.

* You would think people will be happy to see rain after a hot spell, but same can not be said for people in Jalandhar. Reason simple. Rain brings its own proble. Even a short spell of rain seems like a hurricane. Water may not be in Municipal tanks but it sure does make Jalandhar seem like Venice.

* As usual we saw another Jalandhar Youth Congress President embroiled into criminal case. A case was registered against Ms. Multani for misguiding Police and threating PCR employees. Most of readers might recall the earlier news of Jalandhar Youth Congress Presidents Mr. Deputy is in locup for kidnap and demanding ransom and another Congreess youth president Mr Rinku Sethi was suspended after scuffle with Police. Jalandhari wonders if these Congress Presidents get more bold under Akali rules or is it just these cases are suppressed when Congresss is in power. But not to be partial same is likely true forAkali/BJP too.

*Last week Rakhi was celebrated with great fervour across Jalandhar. We wish all Jalandharies a happy Rakhi again.

*Top spot has to be taken by Miss Bijli which comes and goes by itw own wish. Even when it comes, it shows a lot of nakhras in terms of low voltage. Jalandharies have been singing for Miss Bijli " Aati Nahi, Aati Nahi, yaad aati hai magar, aati nahi..."

Jalandhar Top 5 Happenings for Last week Aug 02,2009

Jalandhar Top 5 Happenings for Last week Aug 02,2009
August 2, 2009 19:38 by Jalandhari
Some happenings in Jalandhar for past week:
**In Jalandhar, Lavdeep Singh son Jalandhar jail jailer Satpal Singh has been arrested for stealing ATM machine. He did not steal money but uprooted the whole machine and fled with it in his car. That reminds me of a class IV incident when our class teacher asked Deepak to bring a rose from garden and fearing thorns he came back with roses intact with plant and roots.
** Earlier in the week, son of a local councllor was caught stealing money from a parked vehicle and images were captured in aCCTV camera. Not to forget Sarabjot Singh son of Jalandhar MP aspirant and former cabinet home minister Buta Singh was arrested for demanding bribe. Wow. Honhar sons .. Watch out Jalandhar Dads. Do anyone of you have heard the story I recall our neighbor nani used to tell us kids. Story is about Sharawan Kumar who was carrying his blind parents in a palki on his shoulders for pilgrimage. When he reached Jalandhar he started having doubts if he should be carrying his parents on pilgrimage and put them on ground...
*More possible ghapla in local Jimkhana Club Tambola games. Earlier Geeta Mandir and Central Town Gurudwara came under the scanner because of money stealing accusations. Well bhagwan bada ya rupaiya...
**Some good news. Navchintan Kala Manch,Beas performing shows in Red Cross Bhawan. "Hum" and "The Caucasian Chalk Circle". If you get time do check out. Performances are great. The Caucasian Chalk Circle is about the love of mother. Even though she is not the birth mother over time she develops Motherly feelings that not even her birth mother can match. Very powerful performances.

*** Another failure for Jalandhar Police. Punjab High court released Darbara Singh in case of murder of Khursheed and Ropo for lack of evidence Baby Killer Darbara Singh was sentenced to death in Jan 2008 by Jalandhar District Court. Earlier Serial child killer accused Darbara Singh had been sentenced by a Punjab court to life imprisonment in other cases. For people who do not remember Darbara Singh was released from prison in December 2003 for “good conduct” before the end of the first life term. After that he was accused of kidnapping, raping and sodomizing 23 minor children after his release. He used to target children of migrant labourers. In 2004; after nabbing serial killer Darbara Singh, the police had exhumed the bodies of two of his recent victims from a sugarcane field . The killer led the police to the field on the Jalandhar-Kalasanghia road where he had buried five-year-old Khurshid and six-year-old Ruku, reported missing . Both children were cousins and belonged to Darbhanga in Bihar...Khurshid’s father, Mohammad Vakeel, identified the bodies and said that Ruku was the daughter of his younger brother who lived in Himachal Pradesh. Vakeel said that Ruku had come to Jalandhar only a few days ago before she went missing along with Khurshid from Jalandhar’s J.P. Nagar locality...Of the 17 children killed by Darbara Singh, the bodies of three were recovered before his arrest yesterday. All three, Rani, Asha and Lalu Parsad, were children of migrant labourers...Darbara Singh, who was taken by the police team led by SSP G.S. Bhullar to identify the site where he committed the crime, later said that he had killed Khurshid and Ruku by slitting their throats after sexually abusing them on October 25...The police had a tough time locating the bodies buried in the field due to the dense crop of sugarcane. Khurshid’s body was found lying on the back with his head turned slightly towards the left, while Ruku’s body was recovered in a highly decomposed state as she had virtually been beheaded...As soon as the news of the bodies being found spread in the area, a large number of people gathered at the site and watched in horror. A couple of onlookers even tried to hit the accused...The police also recovered a bottle of rum and a glass from the field. Darbara Singh said he had consumed the rum before committing the crime. The police took the bottle and glass into custody for matching fingerprints...Meanwhile, police teams also were dispatched to Tarn Taran and Rayyia, where Darbara Singh said that he had killed most of his victims by drowning them... Nishu, an 11-year-old girl who was injured by Darbara Singh near Adampur, immediately identified the accused on seeing his picture in the newspapers today.. .

Curfew imposed in Jalandhar following widespread violence
May 24, 2009 19:20 by Jalandhari
The district administration on Sunday as a preventive measure imposed curfew in certain parts of Jalandhar city in Punjab following wide spread violence by members of one community in protest against reported killing of Sant Rama Nand of the Guru Ravi Dass Gurudwara in Ballan village in this district during a shoot out in Guru Ravidass Gurdwara at Vianna in Austria.

It is learnt that Sant Rama Nand along with his some followers had gone to Vienna in Austria to take part in a religious function where he and his followers were assaulted by a group of xxxxx armed with firearms and swords. The reason of clash between both the groups is stated to be the presentation of Siropas to the Sant and his followers.
Followers of Dera Sachkhand and various Dalit bodies today blocked traffic on the national highway here, damaged three buses and torched a vehicle soon after news regarding firing on Sant Niranjan Dass, the Dera head, in Vienna, Austria spread.Activists of various Dalit bodies, including Ambedkar Sena and BSP, blocked vehicular traffic in Phagwara for nearly an hour on National Highway No 1 on the over-bridge near Sugar Mill crossing to protest the Vienna incident, police said. Some of the protesters pelted stones at vehicles, damaging three buses, they said, adding no passenger was injured in the incident.Protesters also gave a call for Phagwara bandh tomorrow. In Buta Mandi locality, followers of the sect torched a truck parked in the area, police said.Senior Superintendent of Police R K Jaiswal said policemen have been deployed at sensitive points to check any untoward incident. At least 11 people were injured, nine of them seriously when two groups of xxxx worshippers clashed with knives and handgun at a gurdwara in Vienna today, Vienna police said. The fight erupted following a dispute over the sermon given by a priest from Shri Guru Ravidas Sabha. At least six men, one wielding a gun and the others knives, attacked the preacher and others

Jalandhari Legend Bhagat Singh Bilga passes away

Jalandhari Legend Bhagat Singh Bilga passes away
May 23, 2009 20:22 by Jalandhari
Jalandhari legend, Bhagat Singh Bilga, the last surviving member of the pre-independence Ghadar (revolution) Party and a well-known freedom fighter, has passed away in Birmingham, according to information reaching the Desh Bhagat Yaadgar Memorial Committee at Jalandhar in Punjab. He was 102 years old.

The man former prime minister I K Gujral calls "a legend" was not a scholar or a man of many words. 102 years old Bhagat Singh Bilga was a revolutionary, the last survivor of the Gadar (revolution) Movement, a struggle launched by expatriate Punjabis in the US and Canada to overthrow the British in India.Popularly known as 'Baba Bilga' and sharing his first name with legendary revolutionary Bhagat Singh, the freedom fighter passed away in a private hospital Thursday after battling prostate cancer. His family members were with him when he breathed his last. He had gone to Britain some time back. He is survived by two sons, society members said.Members of the Desh Bhagat Yaadgar Committee at Jalandhar city, 150 km from here, mourned the passing away of the Ghadar Party leader and lauded his efforts in India's freedom struggle and social service.Born in 1907, the same year when Bhagat Singh was born, Bilga was contemporary of freedom fighters and Ghadar Party members Kartar Singh Sarabha and Mohan Singh Bakhna. The Ghadar Party was founded in the United States and Canada by Indians in 1913 to help from there the freedom movement in India. It was founded by freedom fighter Lala Hardayal.Bilga was only one year old when his father passed away. He was brought up by his maternal uncle and grandmother. He traveled from Calcutta (now Kolkata) to Rangoon (now Yangon), Singapore, Hong Kong and Argentina in search of jobs. He met Bhagat Singh's uncle Ajit Singh in Argentina and became inclined towards the freedom movement.
Jalandhari.Com salutes real life heroes like Mr. Bhagat Singh Bilga. May his soul rest in peace.

Our Beloved Jalandhari Padma Bhushan Umrao Singh passes away

We Regret to inform you that ex Jalandhar MP and current President of the Athletics Federation of India (AFI), Umrao Singh passed away at his Jalandhar residence early on Sunday morning following a brief illness. He was 83.

One of the most experienced sports administrators in the country, Umrao Singh’s association with athletics dates back to 1958. He was the president of the athletics federation in 1968 and then again between 1972 and 1976 when he was also a member of the Council of the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF).
He held several posts in the Amateur Athletics Federation of India (AAFI, now AFI) after that before stepping in as its acting president in 2005 when Mr. Suresh Kalmadi resigned. Umrao Singh was elected president of the AFI in 2008, despite failing health, and retained that post in 2008.
Umrao Singh was also associated with the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) as its vice president and has been one of its associate vice presidents for some time now.
Conferred with the Padma Bhushan in 1983 for his contribution to the successful conduct of the 1982 New Delhi Asian Games, He was also a minister in the Punjab Government under the late Beant Singh before becoming a Member of Parliament in the 90s.
Born on January 1, 1926 at Guru Har Sahai, Firozepur District, Punjab, Umrao Singh’s first love was hockey. He captained the N.A.C High School, Bhurewal, in 1943 and then played for S. N. College and F.C. College, Lahore. In the 1946-47 season, he represented Punjab University.
It was through his initiative that in 1975 the Punjab Government invited the Indian hockey team to train in Chandigarh under its expenditure. The rest is history as the Ajitpal Singh-led Indian team won its one and only World Cup to date in Kuala Lumpur.
