Jalandhar Top 5 of 2008

Jalandhar was a happening place during 2008. It saw many ups and downs during the year. These are the Top 5 things that were in news and had will most likely affect Jalandharies for the time to come.
5. Crime : Let us start with the bad. This year crime was on high in Jalandhar. Apart from usual increase in crimes related to increase in drugs/smack proliferation and petty crimes such as bag/chain snatching cases. There were some kidnapping cases. In most of them Police did well and caught the culprits. The crime that shook Jalandhar was the murder of Ms. Rita Bawa. Rita Bawa was the principle of Kanya Maha Vidyalya, a pestigious girl college in Jalandhar. She was found murdered on Jan 05,2008 along with her cook and two security guards. This high profile quadruple shook the otherwise quite city as far as murders. There were so many rumors and suspicion was raised about the involvement of some high profile people. There were rumors of sex scandal and suspicion was that someone was there to recover some CDs from her residence. In the end few Bhaiyas from Bihar have been arrested and supposedly they murdered her and 3 others for her jewellery and money. Well case is in courst so not much can be said at this time.
4. Politics: There were many political news this year. The elections of youth congress were held. Jalandhar lost one of rising star of Jalandhar Politics; Ex-Punjab Youth Congress President Mr. Devinder Singh Babbu. Elections were held to many Panchayats and muni Councils. But one of big news was also related to crime. Sukhmit Singh Deputy, local councillor and a rising star of local politics confessed to the kidnapping of City youth Gagan Mickey and releasing him after getting a ransom of 1 crore. So basically case was cracked relatively quickly by local police and nabbed all of main accused. But rumors and conspiracy theories are still going around Jalandhar about involvement of other high profile people.
3. Entertainment: Jalandhar had produced many world class entertainers and they continued to rock and entertain the world. But this year we saw the rise of Sugandha Mishra to fame. We wish her success. Singh is King also rocked us Jalandharies and now we are loving Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi.
2. Sports: Same as last year, our Jalandhari Bhajji continues to rule the hearts of Jalandharies. He achieved many new milestones in his career including the milestone of 300 test wickets in test cricket and becoming only the third Indian (after Kumble and Kapil Dev) to do so. He was also in the news for slapping Shreesanth , for his dance shows and "Mainu Ki" incident. Jalandharies always supported him and never doubted his ethics. We wish him in the coming year he breaks more and more records. In other big sports news, Jalandhar is hoping to have the renovation of Burlton Park completed soon so that Jalandhar can host the internationa ODIs and test. We are looking forward to it.

Aadab From Across the Border followup...

Here are some more thoughts from respected Sheikh Sarwar Ji who sent his lovely memories of Jalandhar earlier and has been posted in the blog :
"You know - I believe - what happened! Families used to meet at marriage parties and other celebrations and used tointroduce afresh own children to elders of other families; and vis-versa; so, the relations and faces were imprinted inthe minds of youngsters. Elders used to pat and move hand over heads of known chilldren, ask for welfare of family.salam, dua, pyar. And, nobody expected families will be departed in so short time with unpleasant journey thatremoved the faces and memories about families and relatives from youngsters. Thereafter, everybody got busy inearning livelihood and lot contact with each other for some time if not for ever. Children grew older, got into theirown worries; nobody cared to look back. I have hurriedly put my memories on the net thinking someday sometimesomeone will find someone's name (at least) from family. In religion line as well as in families; people (I salute tothose people) who charted family trees; I took only one sheet of paper. Closer inter-family photographs were alsotaken and could be seen in houses. Now photographs of marriage/birthday parties are kept in albums and when some guest comes couple of albumsare thrown for them to see. Then unknown faces for the onlookers are pointed with finger; she is ??? he is......etc. etc. Another step over this with the younger generation; "why should I know, who is who - I have no time. I am busy..etc. Same generations travels a long way to see monuments; buildings by emperors, civilizations burried andunearthed. == There is always dark under the candle". Sachin, please put my feelings in my related blogs. Ashwani ji, aap se bhi pararthna hai to put it there soour children should known what I want they should have a feel of. Regards,Sheikh Sarwar"

5. Jalandhar has been selected as one of 9 cities in India by World bank and developement projects in Jalandhar will be funded by world bank. Right now the fund is upto 200 crores. The developement fund will be used for improvement of road, walkways, toilets, trafic lights etc. This project has the potential to improve facilities drastically .
4. Well Mr. Dengue is active again in the city. Dengue victims were reported from many parts of the city. City authorities please take notice.
3. Welll it is Mr. Jalandhar, Bhajji who was in the news. But the reason was not cricket. But his performance in TV shows was criticised and some orgs are even filing legal cased against him. Well all we have tio say to them is " Take a Chill Pill"
2. Again it is Mr. Bhajji in the news not for taking wickets but taking Aussies bowlers to the cleaners. His timely half century saved team India some blushes. We hope this does not go into vain and India is succesful in winning the Test.
1. Top spot was no doubt the Dusshers celebrations in Jalandhar. It was celebrated at a lot of places in Jalandhar. There were some news about someone stealing the show by burning effigies in advance by one day. Jalandhari.com wishes all its vistors a very happy Dusshera .

Aadab From across the Border Continues.....

Aadab From across the Border Continues.....by jalandhari 10/8/2008 6:27:00 PM
Last month we wrote about the beautiful memories of Mr. Sarwar. In response we have received another touching letter from someone who is trying to find more about his ancestral place. Here is the letter :
"Salam,
My mother lived in pre-partition Jalandar and was daughter of (Dr) Sheikh Abul Fazal, Vce Chancelor Kapurthala University ( was also a Master Freemason ); they lived in Haveli Danishmandan in Jalandar. My mammon's names are Abul Faizi , Abul Fida ( had a limped foot - very marked and walked with a stick )- one brother Abul Arshad ( who lost his mantal balance and in depression left the house and was never found ever again - though he managed to study till his Masters but failed to obtain the degree ) and only living now is Abul Nasr ( before partition went to Italy and France and at the time of Partition was in Kabul - presently lives in Lahore).
I recall my late mother talking about visiting Raja's Sahib's Mahal on occasions ( commuting in covered tongas and escorted by their brothers and " Munshi Sahib" ) ;
My Nana Sh Abul Fazal had received many medals, decorations ( from Freemasons ) and awards by the societies being a PhD and spoke 7 languages; I have passed on severral of his medals and decorations - which I shall pass on to next generation to keep ... and cherish
I wonder if the writer of the subject mentioned letter recalls these people and could tell me more about them ...
Kind regards
Qurat ul Ain"
If anyone can help this gentleman, please reply via comments below or email admin@jalandhari.com

Jalandhar Top 5 for week ended Oct 05,2008

Here are Top 5 happenings in Jalandhar for week ended Oct 05,2008.
5. With the change in weather, Mr. Tiger is finally on his last breaths and we hope that he is dead by next week.
4. On October 2 there was some celebrations to mark the birthday of Mahatma Gandhi and Lal Bahadur Shastri. The major function in city was at the company bagh where a statue of Mahatma Gandhi is situated.
3. And talking of Gandhi, our last week's top spot was taken by another Gandhi i.e. Rahul Gandhi, while people were still discussing his visit to Jalandhar and who was able to shake hands with future PM, that issue was hijacked by the images seen on National TV. while people were still split on his motives. But this image is definately giving some people hope. Let the time be the judge.

2. So Australia's tour of India has brought cricket back to the discussions. Jalandharies are most interested in how soon our Bhajji will recah the landmark of 300 wickets. Presently he is at 291 test wickets. We hope to see him break record in the first test itself and wish him the best.
1. This week there is Ramleela and other Navratri celebrations being played at a lot of places around Jalandhar and that takes our top spot for this week. Also we are seeing a new trend of private garba parties during navratri season.

Top 5 for week ended Sept. 28, 2008

Here are Top 5 happenings in Jalandhar for week ended Sept. 21,2008.
5. Mr. Tiger is not going away yet. Well MC is fogging different areas in City but still Tiger seems strong enough to weather all attempts to contain it.
4. Last week was the birth anniversary of Shaheed Bhagat Singh. There were some function held around the city and there are some who still take time to remember this great son of India. We salute Shaheed Bhagat Singh and all the martyrs who sacrificied their life so we could live in a free India.
Shahedo Ki chitayo pe lagege har saal mele, waqt me mitne walo ka yaheen bake nishan hoga.
3 Jalandhar Improvement Trust got its chairman this week. Finally it is Mr. Baljeet Singh Neelmahal who won the crown. Wonder what it took so long for Akali-BJP govt. to appoint a head to this lucrative job?
2. Jalandhar MC had their meeting and a number of decisions were made but what stole the show was usual shoutings and walkout of different memembers and sadly all of 20 female members of the house remain silent and did not raised any issue. Maybe it will take time for women to become accustomed to the house proceedings. We concourage these memembers to be vocal for the issues of their respective wards.
1.Well Mr. Charming Rahul Baba was in the city and Congressis were tripping over one another to get a picture with him. Most were not successful but some were atleast successful in getting the posters made with their picture alongside picture of Rahul. The leaders who were fighting with each other as of last month were seen standing side by side. Not bad.

Jalandhar-Rama-Mandi-Chowk-Plight-of-poor

Jalandhar Rama Mandi Chowk Plight of poor
One of our dear Jalandhari "Raman" has sent in this photo essay on the plight of poor in Jalandhar. These are the shops close to Rama Mandi chowk that has been demolished by Cantonment board. These shops were unauthorised. Now Cantonment board might build new shops at these places and rent these out. Well what can we say. Why were these shops allowed in the first place. Here is the picture essay on tragedy that poor suffers:

Jalandhar Top 5 of week ended 21 Sept 2008

Jalandhar Top 5 of week ended 21 Sept 2008by schhibber 9/22/2008 7:02:00 PM
Last week, we took a week off.
Here are Top 5 for last week ended Sept. 21,2008.
5. Well it turned out it won't be Shahrukh but Rahul Gandhi. Well he might not be a movie star but he sure is a charming personality. And politics aside, he is definately talk of town.
4.Tiger. Yes, he is down a bit but not yet out. He is still scaring Jalandharies in various parts of city. For people who do not know Tiger is name of a mosquito species and spread dangerous diseases.
3. Mera Pind. Yes, Jalandharies loved our own Jalandhari "Ghuggi" in the movie and he definately brings a freshness to this movie.
2. It is a unlikely hero. Normally people love to talk about corruption in police officers and how they get influenced by powerful corrupt leaders. But one officer has shown time and again that police does have real power and powerful goondas were seen hiding and running for a place to hide but there was none. Yes he is Mr. Bali who is posted in Bhargo Camp area. Jalandhari.com salutes all honest police officers.
1. Well last week "Sodal Mela" definately took the top spot. Most of schools had holidays and lakhs of people visited the temple and took blessings.

This is based on buzz in the Jalandhar city as well as what Jalandharies are talking about over the web besides the other obvious "; stuff. Feel free to email us at admin@jalandhari.com or by hitting comments below.

Jalandhar Top 5 of week ended 07 Sept 2008

Jalandhar Top 5 of week ended 07 Sept 2008

by jalandhari 9/8/2008 6:39:00 PM

We have started Jalandhar Top 5 of previous week. This is based on buzz in the Jalandhar city as well as what Jalandharies are talking about over the web besides the other obvious "; stuff. Feel free to email us at admin@jalandhari.com or by hitting comments below.

Here are Top 5 for last week ended Sept. 07,2008.

5. Last week as we gave a hint, Sugandha Mishar is out of TGILF4. All of Jalandharies wanted her to succeed but it did not happen. Well Jalandhari.com wish her success in her life and career. She is our No. 5 for the last week. We hope to see her back in Top 5 soon.

4. There were some Ganesh Cahturthi celebration around. But the Top 4 spot was taken by this image of Ganesh Ji which appeared in a household near BastI sHEIKH in Jalandhar City.

3. Tiger. What? Tiger in Jalandhar ? Yes, Tiger is the name of a dangerous species of mosquitoes and is causing panic among city dwellers. Its bite can cause serious life threating conditions such as low platelets count.

2. Mera Pind made it to Top 2 list. It is a nice family movie. Though all of Harbhajan Mann's movies are stuck on one idea. But in this one Sidhu is the scene stealer. Navjot Sidhu) - a well to do, happy go lucky NRI who has chosen to settle in his native village, spreads the message of self-empowerment and entrepreneurship amongst the village youth. Led by Himmat (Harbhajan Mann), the youth set off a revolution of development in the village. Their lives are changed by Sidhu’s simple but extremely enterprising initiatives. Soon, the village transforms into a modern prosperous hamlet and becomes a model in its own right.

The film drives an important message targeted at Punjabi audiences; to realize the importance of being an entrepreneur in one’s own land rather than extraordinary entrepreneurship in the West. Punjabi's are touted to be fairly successful and hardworking that side of the globe, an impression which belies the visible reality back home

and at position 1 was

1. Mangal Tara. Well many of readers are not aware. But yes, he is a popular magician and doing many magic shows around Jalandhar City.

Rumors: we will update soon:

Addab from Across the border Part III

Addab from Across the border Part III

by jalandhari 7/22/2008 7:55:00 PM

We have received beautiful memories letter from "Sheikh Muhammad Sarwar" who is a Jalandhari but had to leave his ancestral place during horrible time of partition. He has compiled his memories in a very touching letter to us. These letters not only contain his memories, These also contain a very important piece of Jalandhar history. The good times. bad times, changed times. Please help by posting comments below or emailing admin@jalandhari.com if you can add or help him in any other ways. We will be posting these memories in few parts. Here is 3rd part:

Uncle Ahmad Shah:

Education: High School or BA. I don’t know/remember where and what job he was doing. His wife was from Mohallah Qarar Khan, Jalandhar City.

Uncle Irshad: Don’t know education, or his skills. He joined army. Later, on the

request of his wife (from basti danishmandan) he was released from

army service. At that time, a fauji (service man) was paid Rs.17 per

month. It was a world war time, (the saying went around “Indian

sacrificial goat for Rs.17 only).

Uncle Habib: No education. Did masonry work. Moved to Bulland Shehr, then to

Ferozabad. He married there and had children. They visited us in Pakistan. Later he died there. God may keep him in peace.

My mother – Hussain Bibi:

Housewife – loving wife, mother; took good care of kitchen; clothing, all household. She used to prepare some energizing sweets of Alsi (flex), Dal Moong, etc. She stitched our dresses. She prepared breakfast and served to all of us in kitchen sitting of a mat.

By the time we come from school, lunch was ready. We used to take dinner all together, father, mother, children. After dinner we were given some fruit or sweet desert.

Brother of grandfather:

Fazal Din. Living in Lahore. Had his own good comfortable house and annexe. He was superviser for contruction of State Bank of Pakistan and perhaps that of GPO buildings.

He died couple of years after partition. Had no children. His wife Janet (jannat) went back to her parents. His house was sold in his life time by him for the treatment of his injury.

Migration / Partition travel

When we were in a camp (during mirgration) at jalandhar cantt, one evening, he went out to fresh up for prayer and never came back. He had all the savings/jewelry on him. My uncles /brothers of my mother/ ran around, announcements made by camp management; but there was no trace. Even after migration to Lahore; our hopes did not die down. Time healed our injury. God keep my mother in peace and reward her best. She took care of us well by working hard. She encouraged us to learn and to stay alive, struggle in education and to earn livelihood. She did stitching work for money. She died in 1965. A great mother!

Why Money for Jalandhar is going to Kapurthala (Charity begins at home)

Why Money for Jalandhar is going to Kapurthala (Charity begins at home)

by jalandhari 8/27/2008 7:34:00 PM

We have received some emails asking us to provide more details on MPLADs fund being utilized in Jalandhar. We did some research and their were some shocking facts. A big chunk of money reserved for Jalandhar parliamentary segment is flowing to Kapurthala District. Is the reason because current Jalandhar MP "Mr. Rana Gurjit Singh" belongs to Kapurthal or is Kapurthal really needed more money we are not sure.

But the fact is a total of 12 assembly constituencies come under Jalandhar parliamentary segment, which includes nine out of 10 in Jalandhar district and three in Kapurthala(including Sultanpur Lodhi). Here is the summary and graph of MPLAD fund spent in Jalandhar.

Block/Urban:Exp. Incurred Till Now(Rs.)
Urban 6,124,995
KAPURTHALA 6,062,288
SULTANPUR LODHI 1,840,500
Shahkot 1,400,000
Jalandhar West 1,300,000
Jalandhar East 950,000
Rurka Kalan 750,000
Nakodar 600,000
Adampur 570,000
Lohian 160,000
Nawanshahr 25,000

We do not want this analysis to conclude anything but would like to see an explanation on this. There might be genuine reasons as some areas might be more backward and need more developemental money.

In case of an explanation absent. Best explanation would be "Charity begins at home"

Here is first part:

My Father: Barkat Ali (age in 1947; about 38)

He worked in Sind province on a bridge project, as surveyor. He was a tracer also and could draw maps. He liked music, as I saw him attending music and qawalies and he had also a harmonium at home fitted in a folding table but I never saw him playing it. Other people from this Basti (Danishmandan), also worked on the Sind project (Sukkhur barrage?).

At time of partition, he was working as manager at Bombay Brass Works Co., Adampur, Jalandhar; manufacturing charcoal heated Irons, silver utensils for kitchen, water nozzles. Nickel plating. He walked to and from his job. He used to go to Lahore (now in Pakistan) to get import export permits.

He used to bring some fruit for us on his return from work. Family used to have dinner together. After dinner almost all parent would come out of their houses and sit outside; doing some gupshup, watch children play for an hour before going to bed.

My father, a very loving care taker of family, used to take us for eye/ ear problems, to a Hindu karyana storekeeper; Lala Lal Parshad as I remember. He took us to another Hindu shopkeeper Ram Chand running karyana store and making syrups and arqs (evaporation from herbs boiling in a pot). He gave us Jawarish Kamuni (for throat) and syrup for stomachache; other things for such minor ailments.

My father used to prepare some medicines at home; like secretion from silver – (put silver in one clay bowl and cover it with another same size clay bowl – seal both of them with doughed flour) burn about ten pounds of firewood or other fuel like: paathi. The silver would melt into powder; blow up and stick inside the upper bowl. Scratch it; save it for use. He used to secrete oil from almonds (Badam rogan or Almond oil) I used to help him with crushing, grinding almonds in a clay/stone large bowl (called koondi – chipped inside) with a thick wooden handle (called Dandah) – He used to spray warm water few drops after few minutes and kept grinding; finally oil will separate itself from the almonds paste. This almond oil was given us in warm milk. He always asked to take a copy of warm milk at bedtime to keep good sleep.

He made some other medicines and I don’t know what which? Published a small catalog/book named “Ramuz-i-Zindgi” – Uncle Ahmad Shah was helping him and I also helped in folding large sheets into catalog size. As much as a child could do. I remember, he gave name as Barkat Ali Sindhu as author of this book. Sindhu – he came back from the Sindh Bridge project and due to this project word “Sindh” was then a renowned word – he took benefit of this flying popularity.

My father used take children to Eid/Dusehra/Basakhi/Devali – organized in an open space between basti danishmandan and basti sheikh. These was commonly enjoyed by all sects of society. Sometime, during heavy rains, this open space was filled with knee high water.

He used to take me to Jalandhar city for text and exercise books; visit shrine of Imam Nasir. Once he took me to a movie ShahJehan (before partition). I was scared when horses were seen running-towards audience. Songs were, I believe, sung by Mohan Lal Sehgal.

Ours was a single storey house with a water well in it and a big NEEM tree. We had a swing fixed with it. There were two honey bee combs; one very large (bari makki) hanging from a stem of neem and the other small (chhoti makki) on a wall.

We kept a cow in house; as other people also had, some had buffaloes, for healthy milk, butter and lassi (butter milk). My phuphy/sister Zohra and myself helped mother to churn curds/yugard, take out butter and lassi – these were so much nourishing

Whenever we went to buy a cow from a closeby village (don’t know name) he took me with him. On way he used to recite this:

HASBUNALLAHU WA NEMAL WAKEEL, NEMAL MAULA WA NEMAN NASEER

Translation: "Allah (Alone) is Sufficient for us, and He is the Best Disposer of affairs (for us); what an Excellent Maula (Patron, Lord) and what an Excellent Helper! “

He used to check how much milk we draw in the evening and how much in the morning. He preferred to see quantity of milk drawn in the evening; so that, if it was not drawn, quantity would be larger in the morning – giving misunderstanding about the total milk during one day.

by JALANDHARI 8/22/2008 9:08:00 PM

Today there was a new item in Tribune that "Sidhu 2nd best MP to utilise funds" .

We were curious as to where does Jalandhar stands. Jalandhari.com team did some research on this and results were little shocking to us as we stand second but from last.

Before we give the facts from the Lok Sabha report on utilisation of MPLAD fund, we wanted to let reders know as to what is MPLAD fund? Basically each MP gets 2 crore to spend on developement works in his/her constituency. Well it can be seen as an indicator of performance of the MP. But this should be seen in conjunction with other developemental works an MP performs.

The Member of Parliament Local Area Development Division is entrusted with the responsibility of implementation of Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS). Under the scheme, each MP has the choice to suggest to the District Collector for, works to the tune of Rs.2 Crores per annum to be taken up in his/her constituency. The Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament can recommend works in one or more districts in the State from where he/she has been elected. The Nominated Members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha may select any one or more Districts from any one State in the Country for implementation of their choice of work under the scheme.

Here is the lowdown on utilization of MPLAD funds in Punjab:

Many Many Congratulations to Boxer Vijender Kumar and wrestler Sushil Kumar on confirming and winning their medals from all Jalandharies !

For people who do not know India has never won more than 2 medals in any of Olympics. India's previous best Olympic medal aggregate has been a gold and a bronze that it had won in Helsinki in 1952.Beside India winning a gold in Hockey, wrestler K.D. Jadhav won the bronze in 1952 Olympics

Since the Helsinki Games, India has been ending its Olympic campaign with either a single or no medals. After a bronze medal in 1952, Leander Paes won a bronze in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Then weightlifter K. Malleshwari (bronze, Sydney 2000), shooter Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (silver, shooting, Athens 2004) and Abhinav Bindra (shooting, gold, Beijing 2008) have been the other individual medal winners.

On that note, one of our reader "Mr. Ajay Sharma" emailed us this interesting article on state of Indian sports and politics.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni wins the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna becoming the second cricketer after Sachin Tendulkar to win the highest civilian award for sportsmen.

Now I can anticipate the reaction from the perennially grumpy traditionalists. They are first going to pull down the whole concept of government-granted awards by pointing out that sarkari samman is determined more by politics, pull and regional considerations rather than by merit, conveniently forgetting contrary examples to their thesis—like Saif Ali Khan winning a National Award for the path-breaking “Hum Tum”.

Then they will go after Dhoni’s most-average Test record and wonder how that translates to a cricketing achievement award. They will pooh-pooh Dhoni’s one day series win in Australia and T20 victory as credentials that do not merit such a high honor, especially in the light of the fact that Kapil Dev, who won the One day World Cup and did some other things of note (like 400 odd Test wickets), was passed over.

They will ask how in purely cricketing terms as of 2008, has Dhoni achieved more than Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev, Anil Kumble, Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid?

We received a very beautiful and touching memory letter from one of our Jalandhari brother who had to leave Jalandhar during the partition time and is now settled in USA. He wants to visit his ancestral home sometime. Please do respond if you or someone you know can trace any of individuals or shops mentioned in this letter. We will be grateful to our visitors. Here is the letter:

"Adaab. Communication mends the broken canvas; if it still leaves any traces, the tana-bana of communications and contact can fill it further. Thanks.
I did my 5th-8th at Sanatan Dharam school in Basti Nau. Then went to Islamia High School near Basti Mithu Sahib when people parted and lost in the dust.
I could remember only one name Yes Pal - they had a sweets shop in bazaar of Basti Guzan.
People from villages; after doing their vernacular/urdu upto 8th; used to come to Sanatan Dharam school to do their english classes. There used to be a 30 seccond "Chup Dharan" period. Teacher used to come and sit calm quiet and so the students - to recover some energy lost by that time. This was nice and have not heard being practiced any where - schools, or at homes; except the natural calm/quite night sleep.
We lived in Basti Danishmandan and walked to school. During summer vacation we studied at headmaster's house in Basti Shaikh - I am sorry I don't remember his name; very nice, kind person, sacrified his own vacation time to enhance the knowledge of his students. I wouldn't find a person like him anywhere. My regards to him.
I do not have photograph. Just the good nice memories of sharing all festivals. Ram Chand was a karyana shopkeeper near Central mosque in Basti Danishmandan, he was also making his own syrups; arqs, in open space in front of his shop, producing herbal tablets for cough, etc. Another person, Lal Chand? had a karyana shop near house of khan feroze khan (whose house had a tall large tree of imli (tamarind). My father used to take us to Lal Chand ji, for our sour throat and eye sores for a tree treatment. I would like to hear from anybody who is doing small business like karyana stores to earn livelihood and yet giving time and treatment to the needy; and giving free tuition to students - No one.
Regards,
Sarwar Sheikh
p.s. My father's name Barkat Ali and Grandfather Rehmatullah; uncles Ahmad Shah, Habib and Irshad.
Habib used to be friend of Badri Mal (used to make his ownsweets, near Central mosque in basti danishmandan)
Also I remember an interesting incident that took place right before the partition. One of the pilot’s in the Airforce was on training flight. When he flew over Jalandhar, he wanted to show off to his girl friend who probably was on the roof top as preplanned. Well, he showed some tricks but crashed his plane!!! We remember talking about this modern day Ranjaha at that time.
I do not know if this can be found in old newspapers or anyone in Jalandhar remembers that incident. But it is interesting! May be others can shed some light… "
